Today, at a press conference in Washington, DC, HIMSS introduced the Health IT Value Suite. Carla Smith, MA, CNM, FHIMSS, HIMSS Executive Vice President, led off the press conference noting that “HIMSS created the Health IT Value Suite to identify, classify and discuss many known examples of health IT value. It is a robust library of value-focused, evidence-based use cases organized into Value STEPS™.”

According to panelist speaker Dr. Angela Duncan Diop, Vice President of Information Systems at Unity Health Care Inc., health IT affects not only hospital processes, but directly improves patient care as well. “Thanks to health IT patients now have options. They have options for better access to care and better quality of individual care,” said Duncan Diop.
HIMSS created the Health IT Value Suite to identify, classify and discuss many known examples of health IT value. It is a robust library of value-focused, evidence-based use cases organized into Value STEPS™. HIMSS collects demographic information, such as type of organization – a hospital, a clinical practice, etc. We record qualitative and quantitative data, such as impact of change due to IT, links to references, and quotes from physicians, nurses, patients and others speaking to the value of health IT.
To simplify this data we’ve collected, HIMSS developed a 5-component classification system for health IT value that we call the Health IT Value STEPS™:
Prevention and patient education; and
