HIMSS15…..A party with a purpose!

WOW!  HIMSS15 was a remarkable experience for all attendees, especially our Veteran Career Services guests.  During our March webinar, we discussed what to expect from a HIMSS conference and suggestions on outlining each day.  On our April call we outlined some preconference education sessions, events not to miss at the Hero’s Welcome to Health IT lounge and details of our pre-conference symposium for our Veteran Career Services guests.

The 12 April 2015 Veteran Career Services Boot Camp, (preconference programing), could not have happened without our generous sponsors:  Cerner, Epic, Hitachi Data Systems & TrendMicro.  We also thank EMC2 and the En-Abled Veteran Program at Rush University Medical Center for their additional support and collaboration.   The morning started with a networking breakfast, personal introductions and opening comments.  The positive energy was so strong it was infectious.  The day progressed with great speakers who shared personal stories and provided phenomenal motivation to our veterans.  Our keynote speaker, Dawn Halfaker, opened her session with a video that documented her personal story of military career, wounded warrior, successful business woman and veteran advocate.  Believe me when I tell you, during her presentation, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room!  Dawn is an inspiration to fellow veterans; her courage and perseverance make her a warrior!

The day continued with amazing speakers and presentations to include: Lt Gen Retired, James B. Peake, Stefan Werdegar of Tyler & Company, Jaime Parent from the En-Abled Veteran Program and Patricia Dombrowski from Bellevue College.  Everyone provided something special and valuable to the attendees.   The day ended with our Vendor Employment Panel consisting of representatives from Cerner, Epic and TrendMicro.  Each offered information and suggestions from the employer perspective and information on specific company resources.

The HIMSS Veterans Career Services Boot Camp was a successful event and a great way for our guests to kick off HIMSS15.  I am proud to say that our HIMSS veteran programming did more than encourage our transitioning military, it created a lifelong bond among new friends.

Stay tuned for what we have in store during HIMSS16, (29 Feb – 4 Mar 2016 in Las Vegas, NV) as we continue helping our veteran’s transition into a new career! #HIMSSPROUD
